How to Join the U.S. Army Reserve

Step 2: ASVAB and MEPS

Minimum AFQT 31 (diploma) or 50 (GED). MOS options depend on performance across 10 ASVAB subtests. Complete MEPS medical evaluation.

You’re matched to a unit at a nearby Reserve Center. Popular MOS: 68W Combat Medic (highest demand, up to $20,000 bonus), 92A Logistics, 25U Signal, 35F Intelligence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most in-demand Army Reserve MOS?

68W Combat Medic (up to $20,000 bonus, EMT-eligible after service). Also: 92A Logistics, 25U Signal, 35F Intelligence, 12B Combat Engineer.

How often does the Army Reserve deploy?

Frequently since 9/11. Many units have completed multiple overseas tours. Deployments are mandatory and typically last 9–15 months. Ask your recruiter for your specific unit’s deployment history.

What happens to my civilian job during deployment?

USERRA legally requires your employer to hold your position and rehire you upon return. You cannot be fired for Reserve obligations. During deployment you receive military pay — if lower than civilian pay, that income gap is the primary financial challenge of long deployments.
